ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Self Help Graphics has been a cultural bearer of Día de los Muertos in Los Angeles since 1972. Learn how this grassroots organization which started in the garage of its founder has become an internationally recognized organization advancing Chicano/a and Latinx arts and their impact on Día de los Muertos in Los Angeles.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Jennifer Cuevas, Executive Director, Self Help Graphics & Art: Jennifer M. Cuevas (she/her) is a Los Angeles-based arts executive, entrepreneur, advocate and cultural producer who places social justice at the center of her work. She has a passion for storytelling, connecting people, and a history of advancing the arts in Los Angeles for more than 20 years. Cuevas began working as a consulting partner with Self Help Graphics & Art in 2017, serving as a strategic advisor, cultural producer, and communications executive, bolstering the organization’s visibility locally and nationally, before joining as its Executive Director in the fall of 2024. Jennifer is a multifaceted leader and brings with her diverse experiences in the nonprofit sector, including previous work with the Vincent Price Art Museum, LA Commons in collaboration with the City of LA’s Department of Arts and Culture (DCA), Academia Avance Charter School (Avance), California Native Vote Project (CNVP), Women Organizing Resources, Knowledge and Services (WORKS), Metro Arts, Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA), and many others. Jennifer has a B.A. in Communications, with a concentration in Public Affairs/Information, from the University of La Verne. She currently serves on the Board of Arts of LA.
Consuelo Flores, Artist and Art Curator: An LA-based artist with an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Antioch University, Consuelo G. Flores has written about and lectured on the Day of the Dead since the 1980s and is currently an adjunct professor at Antioch University teaching a course on the celebration. Her altars/ofrendas have been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, AP News, Medium and the Los Angeles Times. She’s built site-specific altars for the Gloria Molina Grand Park, The Craft Contemporary Museum, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, Cerritos College, Self-Help Graphics, SPARC and many other venues. She’s given DOD tours for LA Metro, has curated art exhibits and was interviewed for the upcoming book: Day of the Dead in the USA by Regina Marchi (Rutgers University).
ABOUT THE CLUB: Founded in 1925, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club still thrives with food, friendship, and fun. Our meetings are held in our clubhouse, Friendship Auditorium, located at 3201 Riverside Drive, near the corner of Los Feliz Boulevard, in Griffith Park. Best described as a variety show, attendees enjoy a catered breakfast, silly songs, club traditions, and an interesting presentation from a guest speaker.
TICKETS: Sales on labreakfastclub.com close 48 hours before breakfast. Non-members are $28 and Members receive a 25% discount when logged into their Membership Portal.
Please arrive between 6:45 - 7:00 AM sharp! Doors close at 7:15 AM. Your admission includes a buffet breakfast, enjoyment of our 99-year-old club traditions, plus a special presentation from our Speaker of the Week!
