ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: The Garibaldina Society , AKA Società Garibaldina di Mutua Beneficienza, is the oldest Italian society in America. Founded in Los Angeles in 1877 as a mutual aid society for Italian immigrants arriving in America, 146 years later, the headquarters are still in the Highland Park property they built in 1965. And they're currently in the middle of a revival thanks to a new generation of Italian Americans looking to connect with their culture.
2023 President Nicole Infante and members of The Garibaldina will speak about the history of the society and share some pieces from their historical archive. You’ll hear about how The Garibaldina was on the brink of closure and how an optimistic and dedicated group of volunteers rallied to keep this legendary Italian institution alive and now regularly sell out their pasta dinners and monthly dinner dances in their time-capsule 1965 ballroom.
